How Can We Become Desire Free?

What I’m to explain is very difficult for most people to fully understand, because with intelligence alone we can’t reach that state, only experience do. You might not want to be desire free, but your journey is going there anyway. The state of desire-free is ever-new joy and ever-lasting bliss, this point is hard to understood by many. However, you’ve already experienced something smaller, many of you on spiritual journey have had one or a few moments when you give up something willingly and permanently after struggling for long time, you’ll feel truly relaxed. In that moment when you have the will to renounce the world, even when you didn’t really do, with that will the eternal peace immediately comes, you’ll never ever forget that bliss. Therefore, renunciation is not to give up your happiness, but to give up all illusions of desire that prevent us from enjoying the eternal bliss. However, I’m here not to teach you renunciation, because it is not a choice but comes from divine grace. People have asked me, how to control sexual desire and other desires? Unfortunately, you have no control of your desires, they are existing karma. Karma is from your past actions, based on the law of cause and effect, everything you do will have its fruition. Your actions form tendencies, your tendencies form your habits, your habits form your character, your character determines your destiny. You are the slave of your own karma. In this sense, you have full free will, because you are responsible to your actions of free choices but you can’t be responsible to what you have not done. If you believe you have not done anything, all are God’s will, then the karmic law will not apply. The Karma Yoga is to lose yourself in service to others, when you form this tendency, do everything selflessly and spontaneously, then whatever you do, you will not have any karma. Although you have no control of the past karma, they must come to fruition, but you can reduce the future karma by doing the right thing right now. Therefore, you’ll have to respond to your desires to fulfill them to a certain extent but you need awareness and some self-discipline to deal with them. The great sage Ramana Maharshi said, any karma contains the seeds to destroy itself. It can’t expand endlessly, there will be a limit where you can’t go any further to desire more and bear more suffering. You will reach more and more dispassion for worldly pleasures if you go higher for sublime goals with self-discipline while fulfilling the desires. You can dissolve a belief, but you can’t dissolve a desire. If you suppress it, it will show up someday without your notice. Desires are of energy, energy can’t be dissolved, it can only be transmuted into another form of energy. You will have your desires transcended as you make your progresses on your spiritual journey. What means transcendence of desires? It means same energy, more dense. It’s like for the same light bulb, give higher voltage, stronger electric current, it will shine brighter(the bulb needs to bear higher energy safely, that’s why you need yoga practice to build your higher capacity of energy). When you experience significantly higher form of energy, you’ll have the feeling of exponentially increased joy and fulfilment. The spiritual practise is all about raising your energy flow so that you can perceive the higher truth and experience the bliss. Sadhguru says:” the joy of being one with everything will never be known to a person who is clinging to something or the other.” This is to say, there are something that can make you so much happier than anything the world can offer. Myself has experienced a few times super bliss and fulfilment that beyond any words, especially in kundalini yoga and meditation, when the energy arises above Anahata chakra, that bliss blows out all happiness I’ve ever had and imagined, if compare with having sex, the joy of ejaculation will be totally nonsense. Not only Sadhguru, all the masters said so, transcendence of desires brings so much more joy in union with God than fulfilling all worldly desires. The sensual pleasures are illusions and temporary, they are not worthy to pursue. How can you transcend your desires? No, you can’t transcend any desire, it’s God’s job, your job is to purify your heart. God transcends all your desires as your purification keeps going. The process of transcendence of desires is the process of purification of heart. You’ll desire God more and more, finally, you will desire only Him, nothing else. The best way for purification is Karma Yoga and Bhakti Yoga, there are various forms of practise and rituals that do purification effectively. While having the divine bliss, the unfulfilled worldly desire will also be fulfilled. In the Autobiography of A Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda told the story about his guru’s guru, Lahiri Mahasaya, before he quitted everything to bring Kriya Yoga to the world, he had unfulfilled desire for wealth, even for such a enlightened master, the residual karma is still there waiting for fruition. With his master Mahavatar Babaji’s grace, he experienced a whole night living in a palace made of gold, every detail was super precious beyond imagination. Lahari Mahasaya completed all his desires, no more, he was free. All worldly desires will be fulfilled in the way of seeking God, and the highest and ever-lasting joy is there for you to taste. Jesus had revealed this secret for the transcendence of desires, in Bible he said: “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew‬ ‭6:33‬). Amen!
